Lesson Plans

The following are SUGGESTED lessons. These lesson plans are not required. They are simply suggestions for those that are looking for ways to increase student participation. Please note that some lesson plans work better for adults and some work better for kids classes.

SAFETY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT of any class.

LSA always encourages studios to maintain the highest level of safety. NO SPARRING should be done without proper armor, padding and safety equipment. It is up to your studio to maintain a safe environment with all class applications. In LSA exhibition sparring, heavy armor, fencing masks, protective gloves, and even metal gorgets are used to maintain the highest level of participant safety.

Lesson Plan - 1 - Adults

Basics BEFORE Class:
1 – Respect the weapon. Some studios are using foam weapons to have students EARN the real sabers others prefer to start with the real sabers.
2 – Front position, tip down (Temple Guardian Stance) - By using tip down students are less likely to turn and hit others accidently.
3 – How to carry the Saber (Military - right shoulder arms) - By keeping the saber on the shoulder, when students turn they are less likely to hit others accidently.

Teach the basics – Be aware of Safety:
1 – Basic Blocking (L/R – High / Low) - By teaching just 4 of the 8 point blocking, it is very easy for students to transition to 2 person drills.
2 – Step by step demo of Velocity 1 (RH/LH – RL/LL) - By doing the step by step drills, an instructor can monitor and make corrections before moving on.
3 – Lines of 2 work on Velocity 1 (RH/LH – RL/LL) - Once the students are able to work together at speed they will understand the basics of strikes and blocks.
