1 - What do I do, as an instructor?
1.1 - Create a once a week class for doing Lightsaber training
1.1.1 - What do I teach?
Instructors can’t be expected to learn all the LSA forms. There are 9 forms (6 on the website, none of the upper rank forms at this point). They are just as complex as any traditional martial arts form. They have their own history, theory and specific moves. As such Instructors need the ability to teach fundamentals first.
Those are what the blocking systems, lesson plans, and velocities do. They give the instructors an easy path to create classes and have the students interact while at the same time working on only the basic forms. The best way to learn is to teach. Think in terms of how much time is spent on forms in your current classes. Yes, they are taught but only about 10% of the time is devoted toward forms. The other 90% is based on keeping their attention while teaching the fundamentals. This system was designed to provide instructors with that exact system. Lots of fundamentals (blocking, velocities, lesson plans, etc), while at the same time giving forms for the long term.
1.1.2 – Where can I find material and lesson plans?
The www.LSabers.com website has all the material you need. Start with looking at a couple of the lesson plans (http://www.lsabers.com/lessons.html). Start with fundamentals, blocking (http://www.lsabers.com/blocking.html) and become familiar with at least Velocity 1 (http://www.lsabers.com/velocities.html)
1.1.2.1 – SAFTEY!!! No hitting each other, or you lose your saber.
1.1.2.2 – How to come to front position (blade down).
1.1.2.3 – How to walk with the saber (right shoulder arms).
1.1.2.4 – Have them stand in line and do 2 strikes on a heavy bag – look for over aggressiveness
1.1.2.5 – Basic blocking (high right / high left) – walk around, test the block
1.1.2.6 – Basic blocking (low right / low left) – walk around, make sure the leg is blocked
1.1.2.7 – Pair up kids appropriately – On COUNTS do Velocity 1 standing still (RH/LH–RL/LL)
IF things are going well do Velocity 1 moving – ONE STEP at a time
1.1.2.8 – Go around and get the kids slowly working together moving with Velocity 1
IF appropriate, have the kids in 2 lines and have 1 line move down 1 person. Repeat
1.1.2.9 – Make it fun. Kids can pick up speed, as long as they are safe.
1.1.2.10 – IF there is time form lines and start to have the kids do rolls WITHOUT the sabers
1.1.2.11 – 2 lines, one doing well, other not doing well. Ast Instructor to ones having issues
1.1.2.12 – Other line, have them roll with the saber.
1.1.2.13 – IF they do well, have them roll with the saber and hit the bag
1.1.2.14 – IF you have time, have kids work together to make a small choreographed fight scene
1.1.2.15 – Make it fun and have the kids perform for the parents if there is time.
1.1.2.16 – OTHER alternative is to teach a small section of one of the Star Wars fights.
This sequence can be broken up over multiple lessons, but should give you an idea of a lesson plan
1.2 – Setup seminars to get more students interested (check with LSA for availability)
1.3 – Look into working with other studios to do meetups in parks (student Ambassador awards)
Working in parks draw HUGE crowds. Make sure you have an Asst Instructor going around talking to people and handing out cards. Also have sabers for sale if possible.
2 – Where can I buy USSD lighsabers? How long does it take to get them?
2.1 – You can buy sabers through Bushido for $100 each. This is WAY below the industry standard for
the specifications that being provided. (16 color RGB, 3 sound fonts plus mute, heavy combat construction - http://www.lsabers.com/sabers.html)
2.2 – If there is none in stock, it takes about 2 weeks if we fly them air freight to get in.
3 - What if I don’t have enough lightsabers?
3.1 – You can start with alternatives (foam swords, Shinai, etc)
3.2 – Make 2 lines (use the 2 free sabers sent to you). Have the front 2 students do the exercise, rotate
4 – How does the Studio make money?
4.1 – Lessons. Suggested $50/week. The studio keeps all the money.
4.2 – Selling sabers, buying from Bushido for $100 and suggested selling price $125-$150.
Bushido has the sabers listed as retail $150
(https://www.shopbushido.com/collections/ussd/products/lsa-ussd-l-saber)
4.3 – Testing the first 2 ranks of the LSA System, suggested $50 testing fee
Ranking requirements on LSA website (http://www.lsabers.com/ranking.html)
Last test has to be done at HQ or by regional director under the authorization of USSD
4.4 – Seminars. LSA will provide seminars, free of charge where ever available
Some studios are charging for the seminars, some are not in order to get more students
4.5 – Tournaments. Forms are being signed up under Weapons forms, Demo teams under Demos.
4.6 – Star Wars nights. This is a more modern version of Ninja nights. These are kids events that have
the kids watch a Star Wars movie, then practice a lightsaber fight scene, while the parents are off having a date night or more importantly having a night to do Christmas shopping as the season approaches.
4.7 – Many other groups (see below who these groups are - TSP, LSL, SG, 501st, etc), have kids and are
looking for a place to drop them off while they are at the meetups. USSD offer the perfect
solution, because their kids can learn skills while the parents are doing other events.
Examples: Choreography groups, like Saber Guild (http://saberguild.forumotion.com/)
Combat only groups like TSL (The Saber Legion - https://www.saberlegion.org/)
These types of groups are looking for training, and don’t do training mainly just meetups.
5 – What does LSA do for me?
5.1 – LSA provides 2 free sabers to each studio wanting to do the program
5.2 – LSA provides 1 free poster to advertise the program for your studio
5.3 – LSA provides all the material, including standardized forms, velocities and blocking systems.
5.4 – LSA provides continued lesson plans each week / month.
5.5 – LSA provides new interviews with world class swordsmen, Star Wars actors / stunt people.
5.6 – LSA is going to provide a social media marketing program to bring new students into the studios
5.7 – LSA will be marketing to outside Saber groups to redirect them to USSD locations.
These are choreography groups, like Saber Guild (http://saberguild.forumotion.com/)
These include combat only groups like TSL (The Saber Legion - https://www.saberlegion.org/)
These types of groups are looking for training, and don’t do training mainly just meetups.
5.8 – LSA is doing as many free seminars as we possibly can. We are not charging to do these events. If
the studios charge anything for these events they keep 100% of the proceeds. Some studios have opted NOT to charge anything to get as many students and non-students to the events as possible. The studios are selling sabers at the events and signing up students for the upcoming classes.
5.9 – LSA is doing free training every Friday at USSD HQ and will be putting in a full Skype and video
system for real time interaction at the USSD HQ, for both LSA as well as any other USSD dojo
meetings so that out of state locations can participate easier.
5.10– LSA tracks student national ranking and awards through the LSA website for registered students
6 – How does LSA make money?
6.1 – LSA makes $25 per saber selling through Bushido or direct during seminars
6.2 – The main way that LSA makes money is through students signing up with the website for $10 per month. They will receive access to full interviews, material, etc and their awards and ranking will be tracked. So please make sure students that are doing the program are registered on the LSA website.
https://www-lsabers-com.membership.editmysite.com/apps/member/login
6.3 – LSA makes approximately $8 per lightsaber event signups at USSD tournaments
6.4 – LSA makes a portion of the Master Saberist testing done at USSD HQ
7 – Why is all the material on the LSA website?
7.1. - We are in a new world. A social media world that extends far beyond the borders of the current USSD local marketing programs. LSA can bring in students that would never normally come into a martial arts studio with a Star Wars based social media marketing program. LSA is not trying to market to USSD students. USSD students are already paying tuition to the studio. LSA is marketing to NON-USSD students to bring them in the door.
7.2. - No student ever left a USSD studio because Pinan 1 was on YouTube. They are students. They learn far more from hands on and personal interaction than they ever will from videos on YouTube. Pinan 1 has been on YouTube since 2005. Those videos do not prevent students from signing up with USSD, they encourage them to do so, because people see them as a standard. It also encourages them to bring in friends. Having the students having a place to reference the forms and material will only get them MORE engaged in the lessons, not less.
7.3. - Similar to how a person can look up how to work out, but they still go to the gym as well as hire personal trainers, the LSA website may show material, but it does not have the MOST important aspect that USSD offers; Personal Interaction. It is the key to any successful studio. USSD knows that it is the instructor that makes or breaks a studio. Being able to work out with other students under professional supervision is vital. Parents also want their children to be under the safe tutelage of a trusted instructor. If a parent sees 2 kids whacking each other, they will look for the closest training facility to help try and keep it safe. On both the registration page and the location finder, the website redirects to the USSD.com website and offers a 1-week free USSD pass.
7.4. - Social Media Marketing: LSA is planning to create a large social media marketing program, but this can’t be done without material. There are literally thousands of Star Wars type demos and forms on the internet, However USSD has the opportunity to dominate them all by creating a standard that will draw people into the studios. Without material on the website, there won't be anything that we can promote on the upcoming social media marketing campaign. If we take everything off, which we could do by putting it under an instructor membership only, then there is simply nothing to promote throughout the Star Wars world. In the long run, by promoting the standardized forms, as USSD has with below black belt forms, USSD becomes a standard in the industry. But in this case, it is a much larger net that we will be casting, redirecting people to USSD locations… over a billion Star Wars fans, and over 2 million lightsaber owners.
7.5. - USSD is in the unique position to redefine a large group of people and drive students to the studios to learn not just the forms but the whole system, including the martial arts of USSD. At the moment, there is no organized competition of Star Wars or Lightsaber inspired tournaments in all 3 categories of Forms, Demo Teams and Sparring. USSD could set the standard for this, but that only occurs through a social media campaign.
7.6. - TPLA (Terra Prime Light Armory used to be Terra Prime Lightsaber Academy) was a small studio that started to do Star Wars forms and put them on the internet. They have received huge responses, and their studio grew to more than 3 times its size in a matter of months. Since then they have continued to grow ... BUT there has been lots of bad feedback, because they did not follow the history of the forms. And they made them too much like Chinese sword forms. (http://www.terraprimelightarmory.com/terra-prime-lightsaber-academy)
7.7. - The LSA website will have new material up every week atm, and at least every month with new lessons, interviews and sword-based material. We will also have interviews with multiple sword masters and Star Wars swordsmen and stunt people as well as actors each month. We will also be doing interviews with USSD Masters along the way, but in order to bring in outside groups into the USSD studios, we want to space them out in between other Star Wars interviews. We have the ability to reach large outside groups and redirect them to our locations, but only if we don’t make it look like a USSD advertisement. LSA is not advertising to USSD students. USSD students are already in the doors. For them, it’s only about a new and exciting program inside their studio. We are advertising to NON-USSD students to bring them into USSD. People can’t see it as advertising USSD studios, or they will avoid it.
7.8. - LSA wants to market to the many other Lightsaber groups, including TSL (The Saber Legion - https://www.saberlegion.org/), LSL (LightSpeed Saber League - https://www.lightspeedsaberacademy.com/) , SG (Saber Guild - http://saberguild.forumotion.com/), and even the 501st (https://www.501st.com/). In order to do that we have to have good information on the site, that makes sense for them to go to. They are VERY cautious of outside groups trying to make money off their non-profit groups. There are hundreds of thousands of lightsaber enthusiasts, that we are trying to reach out to and bring them into our locations. But in order to do that we have to really offer them something that appeals to them. We also WANT to promote THEM and become sponsors at THEIR events. These organizations are not competing with USSD. If our students go to a Saber Guild or 501st charity event using their USSD lightsabers or do a demo at a children’s hospital, that in NO WAY is competition to training in our locations. In reality it is free advertising for our locations. We are ok with our students doing other lightsaber competitions, such as TSL. Groups like that offer NO FORMAL training what so ever, and people at those events are ALWAYS looking for formal places to train. This is why we want to flood their events with USSD students. It will greatly enhance USSD visibility. This is NOT like an outside martial arts or open tournaments, as those events are in direct conflict, because those events are other martial arts schools. In these cases, there are NO OTHER lightsaber training locations, and by being the ONLY one available, we will draw far more students from these events. It’s also important to note, that 90% of these other systems DON’T include kids. Meaning there is no place for kids in 18+ groups. USSD can be the PERFECT solution for kids wanting to do what they see the adults doing.
7.9. - Modern Marketing vs. Old School. This is the modern marketing philosophy. Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc. Even many brick and mortar locations give free samples all the time. Why does Costco give out free food samples? The answer to all of these is simple, that people in the long run buy far more from those companies, than the old-style companies that try to guard their products and services.
7.10. - LSA was designed by an old chief instructor. I know what it’s like when every new program trie to drain money from the studio. This system was designed to put every dime possible BACK into the studios. We know that if we are putting out our hands and expecting studios to pay money, that it’s not going to work. We also know that some studios and people will “steal” our information. But just like other studios could “steal” Pinan 1 from YouTube, we are focused on making the studio more money with us than without us and doing it for no cost to the studios. We only make money if the studios are making A LOT of money from the system. We have been told many times that people will simply steal the information and students won’t sign up to the website, and that is entirely possible. But the theory is that if we give enough away and USSD instructors are making enough money from us, that we will become the standard. As such we are in if for the long game and are looking to the long-term rewards.
1.1 - Create a once a week class for doing Lightsaber training
